SHAKTI BELLY DANCE

'Discover the wisdom of your body, foster the love for the feminine in women'

Why Shakti?

In Hinduism, the god Shiva represents the constant change of the universe, the flow of life. Shiva is also known as ‘The Lord of Dance’ and it is said that his dance is what maintains the movement of our universe. Shakti is the feminine aspect of Shiva, and means energy, power. It is also the feminine principle of divine energy, the mother principle of creation, abundance.

Shakti belly dance is a sacred space dedicated to every woman to nurture, explore and experience self-control and self-awareness through movement.

The original women’s dance was not about performance or culture. It was a path of learning about being feminine in the most sacred way.

Belly dance offers women access to body awareness and wisdom. It is based on movements like circles, hip drops, shimmies and undulations. In addition, belly dance works actively in our chakra system with a focus on our root, sacral and solar plexus. Those chakras are associated with stability, passion/creativity and will power.

Undulations, for example, will bring a flow of energy from the base of the spine to the top of our head allowing the life force energy flowing freely through our body and softening and releasing any physical or emotional blockages within the body.

Dance helps us to express our own truth, to connect with our most creative side and to gain confidence and self-esteem.

Shakti belly dance is a product born from the fusion of many styles Laura learned over the years, with a root in the mystics of belly dance. Laura’s signature style is fusion and improvisation and she brings a holistic point of view to this magical dance. Her classes aim to help women all over the world to (re)connect with the essence of their femininity, learning together to journey from a place of acceptance and self-love and helping them to get in touch with their own bodies - embracing sensuality and bringing joy through one of the most mystical dances.

During these 10 weeks we will learn the basic movements of oriental dance in a slow but progressive way. Every week will be dedicated to learn one basic movement so that students can progressively integrate all the movements in their body memory.

The focus of these classes will be on learning technique and integrating the basic movements through drills, combinations and improvisations which will also allow you to discover your own unique style and play with different movements, shapes and speeds.

FAQ

What do I bring?

You just need to bring water to keep you hydrated and wear comfortable clothes! A great addition is a scarf! It is a great way to accentuate your hip movement whilst we dance.

You do not necessarily need to show your belly or bring a hip scarf with coins.

I don’t have any previous experience in dance

Don’t worry, you don’t need to have any previous experience in dance as this is an introduction and perfect for beginners. We will be starting from the very basics and from there we will develop our skills, integrating more complicated movements as we go along, playing, exploring and improvising with them.

Who can benefit from belly dance?

Belly dance is suitable for all women and helps us to express and connect with the body on a deeper level. It builds self-confidence and self-esteem and is also a reminder of the divine feminine energy that is within us. The energy of creation, sensuality, sexuality, birth, rejuvenation, nurture, love and abundance.

Helps the nervous system to slow down. Working the upper body will encourage you to open and strengthen your neck, chest and shoulders while simultaneously opening a space in your heart and lungs to deepen your breath.

1.

It can be helpful in women who suffer from reproductive disorders: Belly dance works actively with reproductive organs increasing the energy flow, circulation and nerve stimulation of those ones, making them work more efficiently.

2.

It can help ease menstrual pains and discomforts, common digestive disorders and it can bring support through the fertility journey.

3.

Strengthens the pelvic floor, which makes it very beneficial before, during and after pregnancy.

4.

Dance makes us feel more confident within our own skin, help us gain self-esteem and improve memory and coordination.

5.

Improves Posture and flexibility of the spine. Our spine connects all our organs through the nervous system and connective tissues. It is said that the connective tissues are the place where we hold past traumas and pain. Working the spine will help to release toxins and ‘old patterns’ that we may no longer need. When we free the ‘old stuff’ we leave space for new things helping us to expand our mind and consciousness.

6.

It also works with our throat chakra, our centre of expression. Dance is the language of the soul, it is the expression of our thoughts and deep emotions. It is a great exercise for those ones who struggle to express themselves and communicate their ideas!

Benefits

I am so happy that my first belly dance experience was led by Laura as a teacher and dancer. Laura's sunny energy is contagious - I had so much fun in the class, and it was an excellent way to connect with my feminine energies each week, to establish greater body awareness, and connect primal energy

to music! Magical class, thank you Laura I can't wait for your next classes to come around

Laura is a very professional teacher and performer. Always very enthusiastic and positive, she makes people very comfortable. I like the fact that apart from specific technical dancing instructions, she gives time to express yourself. Thank you so much. I really recommend her classes. Stefania

The past few weeks of belly dance classes with Laura have been so good for me. I look forward to each week and feel a kind of passion for this dance arising that makes me feel alive and excited. I haven't felt that about anything since salsa in my early twenties! I love the balance between focus on learning technique and letting the body freestyle. I feel this is a beautiful way to experience femininity, sensuality and joy in movement.

I really enjoyed Laura's belly dance class and hope to continue with it in the future. She has a lovely way of teaching. Great way to build confidence, learn a new skill and get in touch with your own body movement and awareness. It's a fantastic class and I would highly recommend it to all.

About Laura

So I dance... I dance because nothing in this world makes me feel freer than the freedom I feel when I dance

Laura's dancing career started at the very young age of three exploring gymnastics, ballet, flamenco, and aerobics. Laura's passion for dance brought her to qualify as an aerobic and fitness instructor and started teaching to both kids and adults from 2005. Following the many years of competitions and teachings and in addition to a recommendation from a doctor she tried her first belly dance class in 2008 with the aim of easing menstrual pains and early feel in love with the magic of this dance.
Belly dance brought her so many insights and a special interest in helping women to heal and connect with their bodies and embrace their femininity. Belly dance did not just become a healing form to express and connect with herself but also became her medicine and her passion. Teaching it was the way to help others to heal themselves through dance and movement.
